A unique and special B&B, glamping and self catering in Dorset
The Old Forge News 2015
Gold Award winner Taste of the West 2015, again!
We are delighted to have won a Gold Award for the third time for our home cooked breakfast. Comments from the judge below
Lucy grows and produces herself as much as she can in the garden: all suppliers are extremely close by – the furthest is Yeo Valley for the yogurt. Lucy was very matter of fact about the suppliers, with the implied puzzlement as to why should one want to search elsewhere!
The table was beautifully set, with Cornishware china and a little duck napkin ring with the napkin spread out at the side like the duck’s wings – a nice touch. The menu, with its description of the suppliers, offered what would be expected in a B&B plus Dorset drop scones. There is also a framed list of all the apples grown in their orchard which provide the delicious apple juice. Honey comes from the WI and all other suppliers are very close by. Everything tasted just as it should and was beautifully presented on the plate. Lucy’s home made bread, made with flour ground only a couple of miles away, was delicious, as was her home made jam.
Every personnel experience was exemplary. The Old Forge is an enchanting thatched house, well sign posted, situated in beautiful countryside. There are many old fashioned tin advertising signs dotted around the garden and Lucy’s husband restores classic cars – an interest well in evidence. The house is full of nostalgia – old hats, signs, toys, books etc. The room was very pretty, with blue patterned wallpaper and blind, and vintage china; the old iron bedstead looked lovely with its hand-made quilt. Lovely fresh flowers in a pretty vase.
Beautifully kept gardens and fields, interesting old tin advertising signs, bags of nostalgia all round the house. I liked the suggestion on the back of the menu that Lucy will prepare either an old fashioned picnic or cream tea if requested. They also have glamping caravans in the field, surrounded by their chickens and donkey. Lucy also provides excellent picnic & tea hampers.
This is a lovely B&B with bags of character. It is a pretty thatched home set in beautiful, quiet countryside. It was lovely to see their own chickens, the vegetable garden and to eat the home-baked bread.
'Labour of Love' Award winner!
Alastair Sawday’s, champions of independent and special places to stay has launched its first ever set of awards to coincide with its 20th anniversary. The Old Forge have been chosen as the winners of the Labour of Love award. The awards were presented by Alastair and Toby Sawday at a celebratory event at the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol on 27 October 2014.
All 13 Sawday’s award winners have been selected by a panel of judges that included Alastair and Toby Sawday, Ben Ross, Travel Editor at the Daily Telegraph and Columba Colivet from Country Homes and Interiors magazine. The Labour of Love award celebrates owners whose passion and creativity shines through in all that they do for guests. The Old Forge in Shaftesbury has demonstrated this in spades, from the classic B&B to the lovingly restored Gypsy caravan, and shepherd’s huts, the site continues to evolve.
"A slower way of life that Lucy and Tim pride themselves on sharing with others. Keen recyclers, there are numerous trinkets and tools that have been collected over 40 years, from the vintage enamel automobilia outdoor signs, to the lovingly cared for 1934 Lagonda Rapier. Breakfasts are renowned, and guests gather around the table together to share stories in the slow lane."
“The Old Forge is a delightful expression of Lucy and Tim’s characters: engaging, quirky, warm, ‘vintage England’. They’ve poured themselves into restoring these buildings over the years, yet added their own original flourishes, from shepherd’s huts to a garage – complete with vintage petrol pump and enamel signs – for Tim’s classic cars. It’s curious, curio-filled, yet never tacky – and with the gentle warmth of a very happy home. Truly special."
Gold Award winner Taste of the West 2014!
We are delighted to have won a Gold Award for the second time for our home cooked breakfast.
"The menu and signs all show the Old Forge’s devotion to local sourcing and home made food. We were impressed by Lucy’s awareness of the local food scene. The preserves and the bread were home made, eggs from their own chickens. There was a generous display of Dorset Cereals. Sausage & bacon came from a local butcher.
Old fashioned comfort with all the modern extras one could want including GREAT home made shortbread. The Old Forge is completely charming and the hosts could not be more welcoming. Lots of outside space and an unusually welcoming breakfast room.
Most people will fall in love with the Old Forge. This is the quintessential, slightly quirky, characterful English B&B. Food and local knowledge are second to none and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Nothing should be changed at this charming home from home. I would love to stay in the Old Forge once more. We would also recommend a guided tour of Tim’s Lagonda workshop!"

"There is exemplary and total commitment to regional/local/home-grown sourcing with all the suppliers clearly and interestingly listed on the menu.
It was hard to fault the presentation of breakfast. The china was interesting and original, the yoghurt was in a bowl, the berries lovely and fresh and there were proper teapots!
The cooking was fine and the ingredients as good as you’ll find anywhere. As breakfast go, it was one of the very best. The quality and speed of the service couldn’t be faulted and the staff was totally knowledgeable with regard to the provenance of the food.
This was a lovely place to spend the night with a comfortable bed, a superb breakfast and a warm welcome. It is a charming cottage with lovely gardens in a beautiful setting and the breakfast was a real treat."
